With compelling quality and provenance, Penfolds Father Grand Tawny is a tribute to over 170 years of Penfolds winemaking excellence. A blend of outstanding wines matured in seasoned small oak casks, achieving a minimum average blended age of 10 years. The combination of extended maturation and Penfolds extensive experience in crafting fine Tawny wines, has resulted in a wine with concentration, vitality, exceptional balance of fruit, nutty oak age complexity and distinctive spirit. All of these elements culminate in a balanced, clean and lingering tight finish. With each vintage, varietal batches are selected for Grandfather. These batches are individually aged in seasoned old oak casks before being blended together at 14 years of age. This blend is then introduced into the 'Grandfather Solera'. This Solera consists of six stages that are designed to fully integrate all components offering consistency and freshness with a final minimum average blended age of 20 years. Deep amber/mahogany in colour with green-gold tinges, this is a blend of the finest old tawnies. Koonunga Hill Shiraz joined the range in 2002, a contemporary reflection of Penfolds multi-regional sourcing philosophy. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon parcels sourced from vineyards throughout the Barossa. The fruit is fermented for up to 14 days, then aged for 12 months in a mix of French and American oak. Individual parcels of fruit are matured separately to maximise the blend's complexity and finalised through a selection process. The resulting wine is rich and concentrated with aromas of ripe dark berry fruits, blackcurrants and plums with mint and varietal leafy notes.
